Ex-Bulgarian PM Highlights Strategic Importance of Cooperation with Turkey

(MENAFN) Bulgaria’s former Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov emphasized the strategic importance of cooperation with Türkiye in promoting regional and global peace.

“Nowadays, the world is eager for peace. For us, the partnership with Türkiye is extremely important ... of establishing peace,” he told a news agency, noting that both nations are actively involved in diplomatic initiatives connected to the Middle East.

“So I think that with Türkiye, we are a very good example of how the partnership between neighboring countries can facilitate and promote the peace process in the world,” Zhelyazkov added.

Addressing discussions about a so-called “two-speed” Europe, he said the concept has often been misunderstood. According to Zhelyazkov, it primarily concerns capital market integration rather than political divisions among EU members.

European leaders proposed the initiative as a mechanism to overcome political gridlock that has hindered key economic reforms aimed at revitalizing the continent’s economy.

“This initiative, I think that, is not very well understood,” he said, explaining that countries prepared to advance capital market integration could proceed first, while others could join later.

He stressed that participation depends on readiness, not disagreements, and maintained that the approach “is a very particular issue that would not bother the European integrity and the European Union at home.”

On regional matters, Zhelyazkov noted that Bulgaria maintains diplomatic relations with both Israel and Palestine, suggesting that balanced engagement could contribute to easing tensions in the Middle East.
